Client

Established in 1919, the Danone Group is today the world's number one fresh dairy and bottled water company and the world's second largest biscuit / grain product company. To cope with its fierce competitors, Danone relies on innovation and organization. The group operates worldwide and has no less than one hundred thousand employees on five continents. In figures – in 2016, Danone had capitalization of 45 billion Euros and a turnover of 22 billion.

Danone specializes in four sectors:

  • Dairy products: its core business, with brands like Danette, Activia, etc. ;
  • Bottled water (Waters), with brands such as Volvic, Evian, etc. ;
  • Infant Nutrition (ELN), with brands like Blédina, Gallia, etc.;
  • Medical nutrition, with brands like Nutricia.

problematic

The One Danone project is the name of the project initiated at Danone, which aims to centralize Danone's entire internal organization like a house. The roof represents the "Danone Manifesto", the top floor: the management committee and then twin floors representing Services (HR, Legal, etc.) with their associated units.

The Apgar Mastermind Project is part of this overarching project, which shall be launched in 2020 at Danone

Solution

Danone's organization is centralized, so each organizational unit (Dairy, ELN, Waters and Medical) has the same tools and processes for the management of human resources (HR), legal (Legal ), finance, etc.

The Danone project involved reconciling these different organizations into one with a definition of common data by proposing unique definitions of concepts to allow different entities to be more closely linked. Long term, all the different tools of all the Danone organizations will have the same definition of the different concepts and it will therefore be easy, for example, for the Finance France service to bill the North American HR service.

Apgar has been able to set up a MDM solution on the project, called  Mastermind, to start in 2015.

The reorganization of the company began with the definition of Danone's key principles, the organizational units were named Business Units (BU) and a concept was created for services associated with each BU: the Business Service (BS). BUs and BSs follow the same logic and are divided into three levels:

WBU/WBS:

The World Business Units/Services are units that correspond to a world definition; there are very few of them, because they define the different centres.

RBU/RBS:

The Region Business Units/Services are the levels representing the regions defined by Danone for its activity.

CBU/CBS:

The Cluster Business Units/Services are the lowest levels and can represent two things. Either a country or a cluster of countries. The lowest level (the cluster representing a country) and the only one that can make the link between a CBU and its various CBS. In the same way, a CBS can be used by several CBUs.

Mastermind then becomes a data distributor at the center of Danone's organization. Each software program used by the various departments (HR, Legal, etc.) is now used as a consumer of the data produced by Mastermind. In this way the data is consistent across all the services, unlike before when each service had its own definitions.

Earnings

The project is currently finished. Apgar is however still linked to Danone via a maintenance and change contract. I.e. part of the project budget is set aside to change the project within the company. There are also new budgets, as on the Leasing project. For example, adding a new consumer of data, or a new table, etc.

In addition, we are gradually adding new services to distribute the data in a consistent way. One of Danone's internal projects that I attended was the addition of leases (Danone's buildings), in Mastermind so that the services could access uniform data.

Apgar currently has four independent missions under way on Mastermind:

  • Leases, which manages the sites, legal entities, etc. ;
  • Travel Risk Managment, which is used to manage the risks associated with employee travel;
  • DANgo Entities, which represents Danone's governance entities ;
  • Billing, used for billing management.
